Drone wind vs gusts: what to check before takeoff
Learn the difference between sustained wind, gusts and gust spread, then compare both forecast values with your aircraft documentation and limits.
Check sustained surface wind and gusts separately. Sustained wind describes the average flow; a gust is a short-lived peak. Gust spread is gust speed minus sustained speed and shows how variable the forecast is. Compare both values with the exact aircraft manual and official manufacturer data, then apply the limits you selected. There is no universal wind number for every drone, place or flight.
This guide covers the wind comparison only. It does not decide whether the rest of the weather, the site or the planned operation is acceptable.
Sustained wind, gusts and gust spread are different values
Wind is rarely constant. A forecast therefore needs more than one number to describe what may happen during an hour.

The exact averaging convention depends on the weather service and product. The Met Office describes overall wind intensity using the average speed and direction over the preceding ten minutes, while defining gust speed as the maximum three-second average within a period.[1] The US National Weather Service glossary likewise separates a brief gust from sustained wind, although its glossary entry uses a one-minute averaging period for sustained observations.[2]
That difference in conventions matters: a label such as “wind 7 m/s” is not an instantaneous ceiling. It represents an average under the provider’s method. The gust value exists to show a forecast peak over a much shorter interval.
Which number should control the decision?
Neither value replaces the other. Check both against the matching limit.
- If sustained wind exceeds your selected wind limit, the average flow is already outside that limit, even if the gust spread is small.
- If the gust exceeds your selected gust limit, the peak is outside that limit, even if the sustained wind remains below its own limit.
- If both remain within their respective limits, the comparison has passed only those two checks. The forecast can still be close to a limit, local conditions can differ, and other pre-flight checks still matter.
- If the manufacturer publishes only one wind-resistance figure, do not automatically reinterpret that figure as both a sustained-wind limit and a gust limit. Read the wording, test conditions, notes and current manual for that aircraft.
A common mistake is to look only at sustained wind because it is the lower, more prominent figure. Another is to look only at the gust because it is the highest number. The useful workflow is stricter and simpler: sustained versus sustained limit; gust versus gust limit.
Start with the exact aircraft, not a universal number
There is no defensible generic threshold for “a drone.” Aircraft differ in mass, propulsion, configuration, battery, firmware and manufacturer terminology. Even closely related models may have different documentation.
Use this source order:
- Open the current user manual or safety guidance for the exact model. Check the model name, manual version and publication date.
- Read the official specification page. Find the manufacturer’s exact label, such as “Max Wind Speed Resistance,” and preserve its unit.
- Read the qualifications around the number. A specification may describe controlled test conditions or direct the user to additional operating guidance.
- Look for separate wording about gusts. If the source does not define a gust limit, record that gap instead of inventing one.
- Account for the aircraft as configured. Use the documentation that applies to the battery, payload and accessories actually fitted.
- Set your planning limits deliberately. They may be lower than a published maximum. Keep wind and gust as separate fields so one number cannot silently stand in for the other.
For a concrete source-reading example, DJI’s official Mini 4 Pro specification page labels 10.7 m/s as “Max Wind Speed Resistance.”[4] The corresponding user manual separately tells the reader not to operate the aircraft in severe weather that includes wind speeds exceeding 10.7 m/s.[5] Neither cited passage labels that number as a forecast-gust rating.[4][5] The correct lesson is not that 10.7 m/s applies to every aircraft; it is that the manufacturer’s exact wording and model-specific documentation matter.
Do not copy that example into another profile. Repeat the source check for the aircraft you will use.
What gust spread tells you
Gust spread is a subtraction:
gust spread = forecast gust − forecast sustained wind
Suppose an hour shows 7 m/s sustained surface wind and 11 m/s gusts. The gust spread is 4 m/s. In km/h, those values are 25.2 km/h and 39.6 km/h, so the spread is 14.4 km/h.
This is an explicitly illustrative arithmetic example, not an observed event, a FlyWindow forecast or a recommended threshold.
The spread helps answer a useful descriptive question: how far apart are the average flow and the forecast peak? A narrow spread means the two forecast numbers are close. A wider spread means a larger jump between the average and peak. It does not answer whether the aircraft fits the conditions. For that, the two original values still need two matching limits.
Avoid turning gust spread into a universal percentage rule. The same spread can have different meaning beside different sustained speeds, and aircraft documentation may not publish a gust-specific figure at all. Use spread to notice variability and to prompt closer review, not to manufacture a rating the maker did not provide.
Why the takeoff site still needs a wind check
A forecast is one input, not a measurement of every corner of the launch area. The FAA’s small-UAS study guide explains that ground topography and large buildings can break up wind flow and create gusts that change rapidly in speed and direction. It also notes that the resulting turbulence depends on obstacle size and the primary wind speed.[3]
Before takeoff, look for exposure changes around:
- building edges, courtyards and gaps;
- tree lines and other rough boundaries;
- ridges, bluffs, valleys and the lee side of terrain;
- a sheltered launch point opening into a more exposed area;
- rapidly changing wind direction or visible signs that conditions do not match the forecast picture.
This does not justify converting the forecast into a made-up local value. If the site evidence and forecast disagree, the honest response is that the forecast does not fully describe what you are observing there. Do not “correct” it with an unsupported offset.
A practical pre-takeoff wind checklist
Before leaving
- Confirm the exact aircraft model and current configuration.
- Open the current official manual and specification page.
- Write down the manufacturer’s exact wind wording and unit.
- Check whether a separate gust figure is actually published.
- Set or review your own sustained-wind and gust limits; do not assume they are manufacturer ratings.
- Read the hourly sustained surface wind and gust forecast for the planned time.
- Compare each forecast value with its matching selected limit.
- Note the gust spread as context: gust minus sustained wind.
- Check adjacent hours, not only the intended takeoff minute, so you can see whether either value is rising toward your limits.
At the site
- Recheck the latest forecast and its timestamp.
- Inspect the launch area for buildings, trees and terrain that can disturb wind flow.
- Compare what you observe with the forecast direction and variability.
- If a required value is missing, treat the wind comparison as incomplete rather than filling the gap.
- Reassess if the wind changes before takeoff or during the operation.

Limits of this method
- Forecast values are not promises. They describe expected conditions for a time and area.
- Wind is the value FlyWindow presents. This article makes no claim about conditions at another height.
- Gust spread is descriptive. It has no universal acceptance line.
- Manufacturer language is not standardized. “Wind resistance,” an operating instruction and a gust limit are not automatically interchangeable.
- A maximum specification is not a complete operating decision. Read the manual’s conditions and warnings, and apply your own operating margin.
- Wind is only one part of preparation. This guide does not evaluate precipitation, visibility, temperature, aircraft condition, battery state, the site or the rest of the planned operation.
Frequently asked questions
Are gusts the same as sustained wind?
No. Sustained wind is an average over the weather provider’s defined period. A gust is a brief peak, commonly measured over a much shorter interval. Read and compare both.
Should I compare my drone’s wind limit with the gust forecast?
Only if the aircraft documentation or your own selected profile defines how that number should be used. If the manufacturer publishes one “wind resistance” figure without calling it a gust rating, do not silently relabel it. Keep the source wording visible and choose separate planning limits deliberately.
Is gust spread a drone limit?
No. Gust spread is simply gust minus sustained wind. It describes the gap between the two forecast values. It can flag a more variable hour for closer review, but it does not replace either limit and has no universal pass/fail number.
What if the forecast has wind but no gust value?
The gust check is incomplete. Do not assume gust equals sustained wind, zero or a fixed multiplier. FlyWindow’s rule is to show missing input as missing rather than estimate it.
What else should I read with the wind value?
Read the unit, forecast hour and data age. Keep the forecast value separate from observations at the actual operating location, and recheck conditions before takeoff.
